Historical uses

People have burned incense for as long as history records, offering the scent of rare herbs and resins in sacrifice to the Divine.  Incense was, in many cases, more precious than its weight in gold.

Atmosphere & lifestyle

As with candles, modern households burn incense to clean and freshen the air, to evoke pleasant associations and memories, and to enliven the spirit.  A stick of fresh cinnamon incense can bring back memories of childhood holidays and drive away the accidental smell of burned dinner all at the same time.

Incense can be found in several forms; stick or cones made from dry herbs, woods, and resins or as a bulk powder that is burnt on charcoal.

Incense can be burned in stick/cone form simply by lighting one end, blowing out the flame, and leaving a single ember to burn.  Bulk incense is burned on self-lighting charcoal.

Safety first

Never leave burning incense unattended!  Never burn incense without a fireproof surface large enough to catch falling ash.  Never burn incense without a working fire extinguisher nearby.  Never burn incense directly under a smoke detector without ear protection!
